Beginning NaNoWriMo

It’s officially November, and while juggling rush trips to San Francisco and baby showers, work and school, I will attempt to participate in NaNoWriMo. While spending my Sunday in West Seattle, we found a perfect little coffee shop slash wine bar to get going. Unfortunately, instead of working on the novel proper, I found myself wrapped up in character development.
This is a new strategy for me. Generally, I allow the characters’ histories to develop through the story, though often find myself getting stuck on unrealistic responses to situations. I’m hoping to avoid that with this strategy.
What do you do to prepare for your novels/stories/NaNoWriMo?
